Wright Rain Auto-Drain, Frost System

Frost damage can be a major problem on some sites where the equipment is not drained down for the winter in both expensive repairs to the pumps, valves and pipelines together with ‘down-time’ in the Spring when the system should be operating.

In situations where dust suppression systems need to be operational during the winter, the Wright Rain Auto-Drain system offers a measure of protection for the site equipment and the pumping system together with helping prevent site accidents where systems are still operating in icy conditions.

Activated by an externally mounted ‘Frost-Stat’ the control system has several functions, depending upon the pumping control equipment:

• A ‘normally-open’ solenoid valve on the pump delivery fittings in the pump house is closed to prevent water being pumped out into the system
• A small pump house heater can be activated to protect the pump and fittings within. (Unless the heater is run continuously to help prevent condensation in the electrical equipment)
• A ‘Normally-Closed’ solenoid valve fitted at the lowest point of the external site main pipe system is opened to help drain most of the water from the mains and isolating valves
• A link can be made to the main pump starter to prevent the main pump from running whilst the outlet valve is closed, unless the system is running an inverter, in which case the pressure transducer prevents the pump from starting until the frost system is re-set.
• A link can be made to prevent the system sequence controller from activating a dust suppression cycle.
• The re-set button prevents the system from activating until the operator is confident that the ground and equipment is de-frosted and the button is manually re-set.
